A New Approach for Solving Hybrid Flowshop Scheduling Problems through Evolutionary Algorithms

This paper addresses a realistic variant of the Hybrid Flow Shop (HFS) problem, based on a real microelectronics manufacturing environment. Firstly, the formulation of a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model for optimally solving the problem is provided. Then, two metaheuristic procedures are presented: the former is a genetic algorithm based on an encoding/decoding method well-known in literature, while the latter combines a genetic algorithm and a proper local search technique exploiting a different encoding/decoding procedure. According to a wide set of instances, the obtained numerical results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed two-phase metaheuristics in terms of both quality of solutions and computational efficiency.
